Using the internet at home – How do I make it safe for my child?

Virus’s   What is a computer virus? A computer virus is a piece of code designed to replicate itself as many times as possible spreading from one  computer to any other computers connected to it. Virus's can take control of and damage files on your computer.

Always check your antivirus software up to date. Free antivirus software may be available from your ISP or from your employer. AVG is a good antivirus program which is downloadable free from the internet.

SpyWare   Spyware  can steal information from your computer, such as passwords, bank details. It can redirect you to advertising sites and will make your computer run very slowly! You need to use  a program such as Windows defender (free download from Microsoft) to protect your computer. To find out more about spyware; http://computer.howstuffworks.com/spyware.htm

Get them to play the KIDSmart games;    http://www.kidsmart.org.uk/yp/games.aspx

Email   Spam – Unwanted advertising emails - Tell your child never to give anyone their email address without asking you first. Always use a parents email address.

Emailing is generally a safe way for you child to communicate with friends –but never open attachments unless you know what it is! It may be a virus!  Watch the video; http://www.kidsmart.org.uk/movies/Safe_Surfing.swf

Use a filtered email for your children, like the OCN  account provided by school.

Every school child in oxfordshire has their own email address which can be accessed  from any computer at http://mail.theocn.net. This email address is filtered and therefore safer to use than those provided by your ISP.

Or… download the First Class client from www.firstclass.com. Then, when it is installed on your desktop run the program, click on the ‘setup’ button, enter  ‘fcclient.theocn.net’ in the server field and click ‘save’ and then OK.

Parental Filters    This is software which tries to limit your children’s internet access to safe sites.  There is no substitute for parental supervision. Always have PC’s in communal areas.  Get advice from www.getnetwise.org

MSN   Can be safe to use but should be supervised. Children must only add known contacts and never accept attachments unless they know what the attachment is! It may be a virus.
